The state flower of all 50 states, illustrated

The FlatFile Society
The state flower of all 50 states, illustrated

Every state picked a flower. Some chose a backyard regular, some went with something you'd only find on a mountainside, and a few quietly picked the same one as their neighbor. We've drawn all of them, so here's the full list in one place.

We make each state flower in three styles, so you can match the one that fits your room rather than settling for a single look. More on that at the bottom.

The full list, by region

Northeast: Connecticut, mountain laurel. Maine, white pine cone and tassel. Massachusetts, mayflower. New Hampshire, purple lilac. New Jersey, violet. New York, rose. Pennsylvania, mountain laurel. Rhode Island, violet. Vermont, red clover.

South: Alabama, camellia. Arkansas, apple blossom. Delaware, peach blossom. Florida, orange blossom. Georgia, Cherokee rose. Kentucky, goldenrod. Louisiana, magnolia. Maryland, black-eyed Susan. Mississippi, magnolia. North Carolina, dogwood. Oklahoma, Oklahoma rose. South Carolina, yellow jessamine. Tennessee, iris. Texas, bluebonnet. Virginia, American dogwood. West Virginia, rhododendron.

Midwest: Illinois, violet. Indiana, peony. Iowa, wild prairie rose. Kansas, sunflower. Michigan, apple blossom. Minnesota, pink and white lady's slipper. Missouri, white hawthorn blossom. Nebraska, goldenrod. North Dakota, wild prairie rose. Ohio, scarlet carnation. South Dakota, pasque flower. Wisconsin, wood violet.

West: Alaska, forget-me-not. Arizona, saguaro cactus blossom. California, California poppy. Colorado, Rocky Mountain columbine. Hawaii, yellow hibiscus. Idaho, syringa. Montana, bitterroot. Nevada, sagebrush. New Mexico, yucca flower. Oregon, Oregon grape. Utah, sego lily. Washington, coast rhododendron. Wyoming, Indian paintbrush.

A few that surprise people

Nevada went with sagebrush, which is less a bloom and more the smell of the high desert after rain. Kansas claimed the sunflower and turned it into a whole identity. And Maine skipped flowers altogether for a pine cone and tassel, which feels very Maine.

A flower that got fired: Only a handful of states have ever swapped their state flower. Oklahoma is one. It carried mistletoe from territorial days in 1893 until 2004, when it traded up for the Oklahoma Rose. Turns out a tree parasite was a tough sell as a state symbol.

Pick the version that fits your wall

Same flower, three moods. Heirloom leans classic and a little vintage botanical. Sage is soft and quiet. Bloom is brighter and more graphic. Your home state in the entryway, the state you grew up in down the hall, the place you got married in the bedroom. It adds up fast.
